Every once in a while a tremendous piece of folk art surfaces… one that has been hidden for decades from the public eye. Such is the case with lot #89 on May 30th. In or around 1980, a man who’s name will not be disclosed but rest assured a notorious door knock picker no doubt. He knocked on the right door and plucked this root snake from a room full of incredible folk art. He did what pickers do best. Knock, assess, and buy the best. This room of incredible folk art was put together by a knowledgeable collector 50 years prior. The story of its origin prior to 1980 is unknown but one can only imagine the beginning. The curious odd fellow walking through the leafy moist forest who saw this root for the first time and thought… “that’s the one I’ve been looking for.” in a matter of days a little slice here… a little widdle there… 2 pearl eyes… a wire for the tongue… and some black and white paint… done – Folk Art Root Snake. Probably sold on the side of the road in 1930 for .25 cents and set on a shelf with a few books where the paint oxidized to its impeccable condition of today. Surely 30 years later the estate was disassembled as we never really own anything. We only borrow things for a period of time before it gets sold, given away, or taken from us in one form or another. It’s not likely that this snake was ever put in a box with other junk because the condition eludes to that statement. Was it sold at auction on a Saturday morning or did the door get knocked by a knowledgeable picker in 1960. Did this picker or estate sale goer add it to their collection or did it then sit in a curiosity shop, or make it to Bremfield or Schups Grove. By this time 1970 – 1980 it had made its last stop to this particular house that the un-named notorious NC picker knocked on sometime in the 80s. Remember, we own nothing… we only barrow things for a while until it gets sold, past down, or taken from us in some form or another. This picker knocked on the right door in 1980, as did my father by knocking on his door in 2019. So no matter how many hands this tremendous piece of folk art past through to get to become lot #89 on May 30th, you have an extraordinary opportunity to add it to your own collection for the next 30 years.
